Grant Kimberley is a sixth generation farmer and Iowa Soybean Association director of market development, and this is his first year in the Soil Health Partnership program.
“We’ve had a cover crop strip trial that we are doing on one of our farms,” said Kimberley. “We know cover crops can provide benefits but there’s a lot of intangibles there and there is an upfront cost associated with it.”
As a farmer, Grant has to make tough decisions when prices are low and margins are tight, so it’s important to quantify the benefits of cover crops with this type of on-farm research. “Long term, we want to have good soil health so we can pass it along to the next generation,” he said.
